Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512), Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer, 1912. Vespucci first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asias eastern outskirts as initially thought by Columbus. This so called New World came to be called America, taking its name from Americus, the Latin version of Vespuccis first name.
