A tournament, c1350s, (1470)
A tournament, c1350s, (1470). Jean de Saintre defeats his opponent in a joust, watched by the French King Jean le Bon. The two knights are in full armour, divided by a wooden barrier. Their lances are broken and the horse on the right is rearing up. Both horses have armour on their faces, and wear decorated coverings. The king, in crown and ermine-trimmed robe, watches from the stand behind, surrounded by women in veiled headdresses, with musicians at right. Other knights and stewards watch from the sidelines. Manuscript illustration from the Romance of Sire Jehan de Saintre by Antoine de La Sale, (1470)
