St Nicholas, 19th century. The model for Santa Claus due to his reputation for secret gift-giving, St Nicholas (300-399) was Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. He was imprisoned by the Roman emperor Diocletian but released by Constantine. He is depicted here saving three innocent boys
