Sketches in Ireland - Newport-Mayo, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Sketches in Ireland - Newport-Mayo, 1845. Newport-Mayo, in the county Mayo, is situated on a little river that empties itself into Clew Bay, on the western coast of Ireland. It is the property of Sir Richard O Donell, the nominal owner of eighty thousand statute acres of land, but, unfortunately, like many such estates of large sound, but of little value, owing to long leases, mountain waste, and bog land...A cheerful, lively, improved, and improving place, well adapted for shipping trade, and agreeably situated in itself. It is well sheltered by hills and trees, and is close upon the bay, although hidden from the sea by the turn of the stream and the high rocks. Nothing can be more beautiful than Clew Bay, with its myriad of islands and its grand coast scenery; the mountain Croagh Patrick, and the Island of Clare, being among its more important features.
