Memorial service for Edith Cavell, St. Pauls Cathedral, London, 29 October 1915, (c1920). Nurses in mourning for their martyred colleague during a packed remembrance service which included the hymn " Abide with Me", the words to which were reputedly recited by Cavell before her execution. British nurse Edith Cavell (1865-1915) was appointed matron of the Berkendael Medical Institute, Brussels, in 1907. During the German occupation of Belgium in World War I, the Berkendael Institute was converted to a military hospital. In August 1915 Cavell was arrested by the Germans and tried and found guilty of assisting the escape of 200 Allied soldiers to neutral Holland. She was executed by a firing squad on 12 October 1915.
