King Edwards's Grammar-School, at Lichfield, [Staffordshire], 1850. At this School some of the most eminent men of this country received the rudiments of their education. Among the most distinguished [was] the celebrated Doctor Samuel Johnson...The present building was commenced in 1849, and is a very elegant design, by Messrs. Johnson and Son, the architects. It is of the Elizabethan style, of rich red brick and ornamental stone...The School has a very large play-ground, surrounded by a handsome wall...The whole is admirably executed, and is a great ornament to the city. Messrs. Watts and Nadin were the contractors...The Rev. J. C. Bentley, M.A. has been appointed Head Master...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850
