Humble Pie, 1872. Artist: Joseph Swain
Humble Pie, 1872. Mr Bull, the representative of the British people, is presented with a second humble pie by Mr Gladstone in his waiters outfit. This relates to the dispute between Britain and the US over the San Juan boundary with Canada. The Emperor of Germany had been selected as the arbitrator and he had declared in Americas favour as he believed that this was in strict accordance with the Treaty signed between Britain and the US on the 15th June 1846 and which settled the Oregon boundary with Canada. The first helping of humble pie was served to John Bull when the representatives of a number of foreign powers had met in Geneva to settle the long running dispute of the Alabama Claims. Again, the claim was settled in Americas favour. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 9, 1872
